Census of GovernmentsThe Census of Governments, part of the Census Bureau's Economic Census, has been conducted every 5 years since 1957. Eighty-seven thousand state and local governments are surveyed, which includes counties, cities, towns, special districts, and school districts. The collected data includes the characteristics of local governments, financial data (revenue, expenditure, debt, assets) and employment data (employees, payroll, and benefits).
