Information Literacy: 9. Scholarly Journals

I am supposed to find a "referred / peer reviewed / academic / scholarly" article. What does that mean?

The terms Referred, Peer Reviewed, Academic, and Scholarly are often used interchangeably.

Note: Journals, magazines, & newspapers are published 'periodically,' hence the terms 'periodicals' and 'periodical databases.'

Limit to Scholarly / Peer Reviewed Sources

Comparing Scholarly Articles and Popular Articles

Scholarly Articles (Journals)

  • Are written by and for scholars or researchers (historians, doctors, biologists, etc.)
  • Are longer articles and usually include research.
  • Include a list of references, or works cited page.
  • Are often refereed or peer reviewed (reviewed by editors and/or other experts before publication).

Popular Articles (Magazines)

  • Are written by journalists or freelance writers for a general audience.
  • Rarely provide references.
  • Written for the general public.
  • Tend to be shorter than journal articles.
