Financial Statistics and Global Economics

  • World Databank: World Development Indicators (WDI) & Global Development Finance (GDF) Online
    "World Development Indicators (WDI) is the primary World Bank database for development data from officially-recognized international sources. Global Development Finance (GDF) provides external debt and financial flows statistics for countries that report public and publicly-guaranteed debt under the World Bank's Debtor Reporting System (DRS)." In addition, this section leads to databases for gender statistics, health, nutrition, and population statistics.
  • Global Development Finance
    A publication of the World Bank. The 2010 volume is available in print, and previous volumes (1999-2009) are available electronically at the World Bank website.
  • World Development Indicators
    World Indicators (from the World Bank) provides time series indicators, indexed by country, series, and year(s). The 2011 and the 2010 volumes are online at the World Bank website.
  • IMF Statistical Databases
    IMF (International Monetary Fund) Statistical Databases provide data for "the analysis of problems of international payments and of inflation and deflation..." Users may select and display a series in a spreadsheet format, and download to Microsoft Excel. Print versions are available in the International Financial Statistics Yearbook and the IMF also provides some data on its website.
  • IMF eLibrary Data
    The IMF eLibrary data reports displays the information in graphic and spreadsheet formats.
  • TableBase (Part of the RDS Business Suite)
    TableBase presents business information in tabular format, such as: market share, market size, capacity, production, imports, exports, sales, and product rankings. Tables are drawn from statistical annuals, brokerage reports, trade association reports, and governmental reports.
  • The Conference Board
    The Conference Board is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization that researches, forecasts trends, and publishes reports on management and the global marketplace. The Economic Research section includes the latest indicators of regional indexes, links to issues of the StraightTalk Newsletter & Forecast, which cover topics such as Global Trade and Growth, Exchange Rates, and Global Financial Flows.

International Market Research

  • Euromonitor International: Passport
    Produced by Euromonitor, this database provides very detailed international market research, presented as industry, company, country, and consumer reports. Although difficult to use, users may find detailed reports on specific subsets of industries throughout the world. Three recent examples are reports on the market for fast food in Germany, the retailing of durable goods in Egypt, and products and services in the market for eye care in Taiwan.

Country Information & Global Issues

  • Euromonitor International: Passport

    Passport, produced by Euromonitor, is a database aiming to provide international consumer and market research. To that end, there are multiple types of country reports. See the guide "Country Information in Euromonitor's Passport."
  • Euromonitor Blog: Analyst Insights
    Read interesting posts from the analysts at Euromonitor on industries, companies, international markets, and business trends.
  • IMF eLibrary


    The IMF eLibrary describes itself as a resource for finding "in-depth, independent analysis on the financial crisis, development, macroeconomics, poverty reduction, trade, globalization, and much more."
  • OECD iLibrary

    Self described as the "OECD's Online Library of Statistical Databases, Books and Periodicals," this is a massive resource. Journals titles include the OECD Economic Outlook and the OECD Economic Surveys; statistical sources include the National Accounts of OECD Countries and Country Statistical Profiles, which are annually updated snapshots of data selected from more than 40 statistical OECD databases. Tutorials on using the OECD iLibrary is now available on YouTube.
  • Economist Intelligence Unit: EIU Country Commerce

    Reports on the operating environment, commericial indicators, and foreign trade of nearly 60 countries. Includes investing, taxation, licensing, human resources, and trade statistics.
  • Europa World

    This is the online version of the Europa World Year Book, which covers "political and economic information in over 250 countries and territories, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe." Note the comparative statistics section, which allows the comparison of two or more nations in the areas of agriculture, industry, finance, trade, and education.
  • Global Issues in Context

    Global Issues in Context aims to provide international perspectives on topics of global importance and current world events. The database brings together a variety of sources to present and analyse issues in many areas: social, political, military, economic, environmental, and cultural. Global Issues in Context includes primary sources, statistics, over 200 international newspaper sources, and video content.
  • Political Handbook of the World

    The CQ Press Political Handbook of the World (within the CQ Press Political Reference Suite) provides government & political information on countries, with facts (i.e. monetary unit, heads of state), history, regional/global policy issues specific to each country, political parties, and the circulation and political affiliation of major national media. The Handbook also describes 120 intergovernmental organizations, (i.e. OPEC, NATO, the WTO, world banks, and the agencies of the U.N.).
  • Mergent Online

    Mergent Online is primarily used to find detailed financial information about publicly traded companies, however users will find: 1) an option for country profiles; 2) the Report Search contains industry reports by world region; 3) the advanced search may be used to identify companies operating in foreign countries. Sawyer Library has a license for three simultaneous users, therefore please "log out" when you have completed your research.
  • Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO)

    Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO) is a database for theory and research in international affairs. It contains a wide range of scholarship, dating from 1991 onward, that includes working papers, occasional papers, policy briefs, conferences proceedings, case studies, e-books, and journals.

Global Industries and Companies

  • Euromonitor International: Passport
    Euromonitor's Passport provides detailed international market research, presented as industry, company, country, and consumer reports. See the guide: Industry Information in Euromonitor's Passport.
  • S & P NetAdvantage: Global Industries
    The 'Industries' section of Standard & Poor's NedAdvantage (located in the top blue banner) leads to both U.S. Industry Surveys (covering 52 industries) and to Global Industry Surveys, which cover 26 industries, grouped by region (Asia, Europe, Latin America).
  • Mergent Online
    Mergent Online is primarily used to find financial information about publicly traded companies, however users will find an option for industry reports, covering 29 industries in North America, Asia Pacific, and Europe. There are also brief country profiles, and the advanced search may be used to identify companies operating in foreign countries. Sawyer Library has a license for three simultaneous users, therefore please "Log Out" when you have completed your research.
  • RDS Business Suite
    RDS Business Suite consists of three components: Business & Industry, Business & Management Practices, and TableBase. The components may be searched separately or simultaneously. The Business & Industry section focuses on information about companies, industries, products and markets. It covers all industries, both in the United States and internationally.
  • LexisNexis Academic
    In addition to newspapers, Lexis also contains Company Profiles (includes international companies), and SEC filings, which can be searched for SEC 20-F reports (submitted by foreign companies trading in U.S. stock exchanges).

Business Journals and Newspapers

  • Business Source Complete (BSC)

    BSC covers over 8,800 business sources, including 1,100 scholarly publications. Sample titles include the Harvard Business Review. If your search terms include the name of a country, check within the folder Publication Type, and check the Country Reports.
  • Wall Street Journal

    The Wall Street Journal, the financial newspaper of record, offers coverage of national and international finance and business news. Full-text coverage extends from 1984 to the present.
  • LexisNexis Academic: News

    Lexis covers a wide range of news resources, including both domestic and foreign newspapers, business news sources, trade journals, wire services, and transcripts. Select 'Search by Content Type' > All News.
