Brief History of the Mildred F. Sawyer Library

Suffolk University's first full-time librarian was recruited in 1936. Esther Newsome was hired initially to be the librarian for the newly formed College of Liberal Arts. In 1937 the 20 Derne Street building was reconstructed and the College and Law school collections were consolidated there. The two libraries were separated in 1967.  In 1982 the Pallot Library in the Archer Building  that served the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of Management was moved to 8 Ashburton Place. The building was named for Frank Sawyer, a University benefactor, and the Library was named for his wife, Mildred F. Sawyer. In May 2006, the Sawyer Library moved to a beautiful new space in the Stahl building at 73 Tremont Street. The new library occupies 3 floors of the building and is twice the size of the old library.
