WRI 101 Professor Featherman Summer 2020: Displaying Data on the Maps tab

Displaying Data on the Maps tab

1. Select the "Maps" tab.

2. The "Thematic Controls" menu in DemographicsNow provides access to the data mapping functions. These functions include enabling the data overlay, being able to change the colors that represent the data, and most importantly, accessing the data file you want to present on the map.

3. The "Variable" menu contains the statistical data you want to display about your geographies. Select "Choose" to open the report menu

4. To preserve screen space, in this menu the reports have been categorized, so you have to work through a tree system to arrive at a mappable data point. "Basic Variables" is the top level of this branch of the tree. Click "Basic Variables" to view the reports in this category.

5. This report category displays the available years' data. "Current Year Estimates (2019)" fits best with displaying current data. Select "Current Year Estimates (2019)" to see the reports in this category.

6. This report category displays the subject listing of the available reports. You can explore any of these report subjects that you think will relate to your essay. Here, I will select "Income".

7. This category will further refine the report subject to its topics. Within the "Income" subject, there are many interesting topics to explore. I will select "Household", to investigate household income data.

8. Finally we arrive at the mappable data. This is the end of the tree menu, and in this case I have selected to map the "Average (Mean) Household Income"

The map below displays the Average mean household income, and outlines the Worcester county and Westborough school district geographies I selected at the very beginning of the DemographicsNow searches.
