CJN 321 - Research Methods in Communication: Policy Documents: Sources: Primary / Secondary

Primary Sources: Original Policy Documents, Written by the Issuing Agency

Using the Library to track down policies.

  • Your search of the library resources for information relating to policies will most likely result in either articles from reference books (such as CQ Almanac), or articles from journals/newspapers, both of which may discuss specific (government / institutional) policies.
  • Reference books and journal / newspaper articles are secondary sources.
  • The wording of the actual policies may (or may not) be reprinted, in part or in whole, as a part of the discussion within the secondary source.
  • You may need to use the information, provided in the secondary source, to track down the original public policy document.
  • Be aware of clues to track down, such as Public Law numbers or court case citations.
