Finding & Using Non-English Content
Sometimes reading articles on a topic in one's own language can help with understanding the topic, and thereby with researching the topic in English.
English is the predominant language in the Sawyer Library's periodical databases, however a few newspaper and journal collections do contain some non-English content. Spanish, French, and German are the three languages with the best representation, and to a lesser extent, publications in other languages are also available.
Newspaper & Academic Sources with Non-English Content
- ABI/INFORM Collection This link opens in a new windowTo view a list of publications by language, choose 'Publications' > in the left margin ' choose 'Language' > then 'more options' for a list of all the covered languages. Select the boxes of the appropriate language to view the publication titles.
- Academic Search Complete This link opens in a new windowFrom the top blue banner, choose 'More' > 'Indexes' > then in the 'Browse an Index' drop down box, select 'Language' and click on 'Browse.' A list of all the languages contained in ASC is displayed, with a count of the number of articles available in that language. Note: relative to the 21,449,225 items written in English, there is not a great deal of material available in other languages. Approximately 160,000 items are in Spanish, 48,000 are in French, and 20,000 are in German. That said, a range of languages are represented, including Arabic, Chinese, Croatian, Lithuanian, and Turkish.
- Business Source Complete This link opens in a new windowLike ASC above, Business Source Complete is a periodical database from EBSCO, and as such it will behave much the same as Academic Search Complete. From the top banner, choose 'More' > 'Indexes' > choose 'Language' from the drop down box, and click 'Browse.'
- Nexis UniFrom the "All Nexis Uni" drop-down button, choose 'News' > 'News by Language.' Select a language from the list: Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, Chinese.
