Follow the Progression of Scholarship

By identifying an important article in a discipline, the reader can trace the (earlier) sources that the author used in his/her scholarship by checking the article's bibliography (references). In addition, the reader may be able to identify subsequent articles, which have the target article listed within their bibliographies.

By evaluating the "scholarly conversation" that exists around a particular article, readers can try to determine how a particular field is "trending,"  or follow controversies or challenges to a particular study.  It can also indicate how significant a particular article is considered.

This guide will illustrate ways of tracing citations to a particular article or study in Sawyer Library databases.
