Library Instruction - Information Literacy

At the request of faculty, the Reference Librarians of the Sawyer Library will teach a Library Instruction session for any class requiring a term paper, or research project. Information literacy, the overarching goal of library instruction, requires the collaborative efforts of faculty and librarians. The more information that the Librarians have about the goals and requirements of the course assignment, the more effective the instruction will be.

To request a library instruction please feel free to talk to us in person at the Reference Desk, or call 617-573-8532, or use the online request form.

Tools for Faculty Research

The guide below strives to assist faculty with publishing-related tasks, such identifying and evaluating journals, understanding impact factors, organizing references, and tracking who cited a particular publication.

Off-campus database users should log in using the standard Suffolk University username and password information.

Course Reserves - Circulation Department

Please make sure that the Suffolk University Bookstore has received an order for your required books.  It is through the Bookstore that the Library purchases at least one copy of all required textbooks, to be held at the Circulation/Reserve Desk.  If you do not order required materials through the Suffolk University bookstore, the Sawyer Library will not have required books on reserve.

  • At least one copy of all required textbooks for College of Arts and Sciences and Sawyer Business School courses are kept at the Circulation/Reserves Desk.
  • Supplemental course readings are also kept on reserve at the request of the faculty. To request that additional material be placed on reserve, see the online form.
  • Personal copies of materials for course reserves may also be added.  Bring the items to the circulation desk and complete a brief from. Items will be returned at the end of the semester.
  • Reserves materials may be used for two hours inside the library.
  • Course Evaluation Notebooks are kept on permanent reserve.

Collection Development

The Sawyer Library values the input of faculty for collection development to support the undergraduate / graduate curriculum, and faculty research. If you identify books that the Library does not own (and does not provide access to an online version), which you believe the Library should own, please let us know. The Library will make all reasonable efforts, within the constraints of our budget and space, to accommodate requests.

Requests for journal subscriptions (in print or online), databases, and films need additional consideration. Journal and database subscriptions require a commitment to renew the subscription year-to-year. This decision is dependent on the expectations of the availability of funds to cover the ongoing costs. Copyright restrictions impact the purchase of DVDs and subscriptions to streaming media. Fees for performance rights are included in the purchase / subscription cost, which makes the institutional purchase of films far more expensive than the cost for individuals. Again, the Library will make all reasonable efforts, within the constraints of our budget, to accommodate requests.

Interlibrary Loan (I.L.L.)

The Sawyer Library will make all reasonable accommodations to further faculty research. To that end, the Sawyer Library  provides document delivery services to members of the CAS and SBS Suffolk Community. to provide document delivery services to obtain materials that the Library  does not already own or have direct access to.

Please see the online request forms for articles, books, and book chapters, as well as additional information about interlibrary loan polices and procedures (listed under Faculty Interlibrary Loan.).
