Scholarship as a Conversation - and the Life Cycle of Scientific Information
- ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher EducationIn 2016 the Association of College and Research Libraries adopted the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. Included in that framework is the concept of Scholarship as Conversation. As stated by ACRL: "Research in scholarly and professional fields is a discursive practice in which ideas are formulated, debated, and weighed against one another over extended periods of time." While intended to describe a component of information literacy as a whole, this frame has special relevancy to the sciences.

Google Scholar's motto is a variant of an acknowledgement that dates back to the Romans. Namely, that knowledge advances by building upon the work that has been done by the scholars that came before us. Otherwise, society is condemned to reinventing the wheel.
