Library Introduction & Instruction: Accessing Information

Accessing Information

The Mildred F. Sawyer Library home page offers links to the catalog (OPAC), to subscription databases, and to librarian-created Guides.  Accessing quality information begins at the Library home page.

  • The catalog is the gateway to the Library books, ebooks, journal/periodical titles, videos, and microforms.

  • Library databases are electronic indexes, abstracts, and full-texts of journals/periodicals. Material in library databases are  selected for the database and are authored, dated, and often go through an editorial evaluation (review by scholars). They are, therefore, more reliable than unsubstantiated content found on the general web.

  • The librarian-created  Research Guides provide the user with subject-specific information gathered from all tools (OPAC, subscription databases, and even websites).

  • Access to online, subscription databases is available to current Suffolk University students, faculty, and staff via ID number, when off-campus.
  • To locate an online journal, click eJournals, and type in the journal title
