Library Introduction & Instruction: Internet Sources & Subscription Databases Defined

Subscription Databases - Defined

Definition:

Subscription databases consist of published journals, magazines, reports, documents, newspapers, books, image collections, and more.  These databases are available online via the Internet.  Libraries subscribe and provide access to these resources for their patrons. Subscription databases are not freely available to the public. When you search one of these databases, you are not searching the general Web.

Internet or Web Sources - Defined

Definition:

Internet or Web sources include sites of businesses, government agencies, organizations, universities and individuals.  Most Internet or Web sites are publicly accessible for free.  Many sites provide access to quality information, however, quality sites exist along with junk.  Anyone can publish anything on the Web.  A researcher must carefully evaluate Web resources.
